English Faculty Positions 

The Zhejiang University/University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Institute (ZJU-UIUC Institute) in Haining, China has a limited number of full-time faculty positions (with the possibility of either tenure-track faculty positions or non-tenured teaching faculty positions) to teach first-year composition courses, various English general education courses, and advanced composition, available immediately.

All candidates are required to have a doctorate degree in English or other relevant field, plus teaching experience at the college level.  Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence and leadership in teaching writing at the college level.

The ZJU-UIUC Institute is an engineering college on the new Zhejiang University (ZJU) International Campus in Haining, China, about 120 km southwest of Shanghai. The ZJU-UIUC Institute conducts teaching and research in broad program themes of engineering sciences for human health, engineering sciences for flexible manufacturing, and engineering sciences at the nexus of energy, environment, and sustainable development. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Classes and student activities are conducted in English.  Students have the opportunity to earn dual degrees from ZJU and from UIUC.  Many of the Institute’s research activities have important humanities aspects, including understanding of social and economic impact, consideration of human interactions, impact on education, and public outreach.

 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for faculty members in the English program of the Institute include direct teaching of composition, evaluation of written work in advanced classes, mentoring of student reading and writing clubs, development and teaching of English general education courses, and carrying out seminars and workshops on technical writing.  These education activities are managed and led by the Assistant Director of Rhetoric from the University of Illinois.  Candidates in tenure track positions will be expected to support humanities aspects of the Institute’s research program.  All candidates will be expected to support the Assistant Director of Rhetoric to meet curriculum needs for University of Illinois degrees, and report directly to the Dean of the ZJU-UIUC Institute.
