JOB DESCRIPTIONS: 

The Institute for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech 南方科技大学) invites applications for full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty positions in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Studies, Urban StudiesNew Media and Visual Culture, and STS (Science, Technology and Society) at ranks of Full/Associate/Assistant Professor, to begin in August, 2022.

The successful candidates of these four areas will contribute to social science curricula that encourage interdisciplinary approach. Quality undergraduate teaching and mentorship, as well as innovative research and service are expected. With the exception of senior candidates with tenure, initial appointment will normally be made on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement. Tenure review and promotion normally take place before completion of the second three-year contract.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Applicants should have a PhD degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Senior candidates are expected to have a high international standing in the fields, with an exceptional track record of high-quality research and scholarly publications. The university teaching languages are English and Chinese. Satisfactory knowledge of Chinese is preferable but not required.

SUSTech Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts Junior Fellowship Application

Meanwhile, the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts at SUSTech invites applications for Junior Fellowships in the social sciences and humanities. These postdoctoral fellowships aim at fostering the academic careers of scholars who have recently received their Ph.D. degrees by providing a competitive package and membership in an interdisciplinary scholarly community. The Society will select a cohort of up to ten Junior Fellows for the class of 2022. Those selected will be offered a two-year postdoctoral appointment beginning in August 2022.

Junior Fellows are expected to devote their time to productive scholarship, focusing on publishing their dissertation research, undertaking new research in accordance with their proposed project, and engaging in other original work that will further their academic careers. The Society aims to foster teaching excellence in the humanities and social sciences, and the fellowships carry with them a teaching responsibility of four 2-credit courses over the two-year period, one course per term.

Eligibility

The Junior Fellowship competition is open to recent Ph.D. recipients from all areas of specialization in the humanities and social sciences; candidates must have received their doctoral degree no later than June 30, 2022 but no earlier than December 1, 2018. They should demonstrate outstanding original scholarship and a strong capacity for independent work, and preferably have acquired solid teaching experience.

Both English and Chinese are commonly used by all of the academic programs and in most events at SUSTech. Courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels are taught in either English or Chinese. The Society encourages applications from non-Chinese citizens and scholars who conduct their teaching and research in English. Satisfactory knowledge of Chinese is preferable but not required.

Junior Fellows receive an annual stipend totaling ¥300,000 (approximately US $46,220) plus additional research and housing allowances (up to ¥100,000). The Society will also provide Fellows with office space, as well as access to library resources and laboratory facilities at SUSTech, health insurance and other benefits.

  • -a curriculum vitae
  • -a personal statement (of 1000 – 2000 words) outlining your dissertation or other major research projects, professional goals, and any other information relevant to your candidacy
  • -a dissertation abstract
  • -a writing sample (one chapter of the dissertation, or one published article related to your dissertation or most recent research project)
  • -a research plan (no longer than 1000 words) for the two-year fellowship period at SUSTech
  • -three letters of recommendation, to be sent directly by the referees to SUSTech via email (fellows@sustech.edu.cn)

All materials above should be sent by email to fellows@sustech.edu.cn no later than February 15, 2022.

All candidates will be informed of the status of their application by the end of May, 2022.
