Our history began in 1956 with the establishment of the Department of Economics under Guangdong Foreign Trade School. In 1980, Guangzhou Foreign Trade Institute was founded as an undergraduate institute directly affiliated to the former Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (now Ministry of Commerce). This institution was one of the earliest ones where China’s higher education in international economics and trade took shape, offering a range of departments including the Department of Foreign Trade and Economics. In May 1995, under the guidance of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Guangzhou Foreign Trade Institute was transferred to Guangzhou Foreign Languages Institute and was officially renamed as Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). In 1997, School of International Economics and Trade of GDUFS was established. In 2014, it was renamed as School of Economics and Trade based on the need of program adjustment.

SET is always committed to the training of high-quality economics and trade professionals with global visions in an aim to develop first-class disciplines and professional talents. SET now has a postdoctoral research center in Applied Economics and grants doctoral degrees in Applied Economics with three disciplines: International Trade, Regional Economics and Industrial Economics. It also grants master’s degrees in Theory of Economics and Applied Economics, including nine master’s programs namely, International Trade, Industrial Economics, Regional Economics, Finance, Economic History, World Economy, National Economics, Labor Economics and Population, Resources and Environmental Economics as well as Master of International Business (MIB). The School offers four bachelor degrees in International Economics and Trade, Economics, Finance and Taxation. Three degree programs in International Economics and Trade are designed as International Organization Innovation Class, Bilingual International Class and Rennes Innovation Class (between GDUFS and ESC Rennes School of Business).

SET has 111 full-time teachers, including 8 Yunshan Scholars, 58 professors and research fellows, 32 associate professors and associate research fellows, and 21 lecturers. Over 70 percent of them have doctoral degrees. In addition, 9 teachers from other schools give courses in SET. We have several university-level bases, innovation research teams and research centers. In the recent years, the faculty has undertaken a total of 6 national social science foundation projects and key projects of the Ministry of Education, about 30 national science foundation projects and more than 50 ministerial and provincial general projects. Over 240 high-quality academic papers have been published in Economic Research Journal, China Economic Quarterly, Management World and other domestic and overseas academic journals. A total of 4 papers have been awarded with the Outstanding Achievement Prize for Scientific Research in Higher Education by the Ministry of Education, and another 40 awarded achievement prizes for scientific research and teaching at the ministerial and provincial level and above.

Focusing on the building of platforms for scientific research, we establish a number of influential research institutes in the university, including School of International Governance Innovation, Center for Cliometrics Studies of China and Non-State-Owned Economy Development Research Center. Meanwhile, in terms of the discipline building, talent training and the application of advances in science and technology, SET has established close collaborations with Research Center for International Economics and Trade, Center for Cantonese Merchants Research, Institute of City Strategy Studies, Research Institute of International Services Outsourcing, and other provincial research bases. SET also worked with The General Administration of Customs of China and set up the Center for Global Trade Monitoring and Analysis (Guangdong).

SET has established cooperation with well-known overseas universities and colleges from 13 countries and regions, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, France and Spain. Long-term collaboration has been seen in the visits between teachers, exchange programs of students, scientific cooperation and so on. So far, we have conducted joint programs for dual degrees with the University of Queensland, Audencia Business School and other universities. In addition, SET launched three degree programs in International Economics and Trade, including International Organization Innovation Class, Bilingual International Class and Rennes Innovation Class (between GDUFS and ESC Rennes School of Business) and also set up the International Governance Innovation Class. Every year, around 60 students participate in the exchange programs. About 40 international students are currently studying in SET.

With the training of professionals as its core, SET give emphasis on the building of a platform to improve the comprehensive quality of students and the cultivation of professionals with innovation, inter-disciplinary and applied qualities. Professional Skills Challenge Competition, one of the top ten activities in GDUFS, is a provincial-level student activity SET hosts. Each year, we hold termly campus activities with distinctive SET features, such as English competition, start-up challenge competition, career planning competition, English drama competition, singing competition, sports meeting, “Culture, Science and Technology, Health Care Activities in Rural Areas”, etc.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will be a PhD majored in economics and has experience of teaching and research in economics. The candidate should work in GDUFS as a full-time job.

Duties

  • Teaching International Economics, Intercultural business negotiation and Regional Economic Development and Policy, or Behavioral economics, or Institutional Economics for undergraduate students in English.
  • Carry out scientific research in economics.
  • Actively apply for research project funded by Chinese government, such as National Natural Science Fund (China).

Remuneration Package

Standard of Salary

  • Associate Professor, RMB 11,000-RMB 13,000 /month;
  • Professor, RMB 13,000 – RMB 18,000 /month;
  • Well-known Scholar, up to RMB 23,000 /month.
  • (Long-term foreign teachers should pay individual income tax.)

Free Accommodation

  • We provide free accommodation on campus for the long-term foreign teachers (Fees of electricity, gas and toll call should be paid by individuals.)

Insurance & Medical Care

  • Long-term foreign teachers will entitle to public medical care the same as the other faculty members of the school. Besides, we take out the insurance for severe diseases, hospitalization and accidental injury for the foreign teachers under 65 during their working period in the university.

Flight Subsidy (paid monthly, inclusive of salary)

  • America, RMB 1,100 / month;
  • Canada, RMB 1,200 /month;
  • Western Europe, RMB 1,200 / month.
