About the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory(SZBL)
The Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) is a newly established institute located in the heart of the China Greater Bay Area. Launched by the Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School and Shenzhen city, SZBL focuses on biomedical research with an initial 5-year budget of 2 billion USD. SZBL aspires to be a world-class research institute and intellectual destination dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and diseases while spurring solutions to the grand challenges confronting our world’s population and human well-being. The mission of the SZBL is to create a new research model to boost the health sciences and to nurture the innovation-oriented biotechnology industry.
About the Institute of Molecular Physiology of SZBL
Institute of Molecular Physiology focuses on studying molecular biology and molecular basis of physiological processes.
Molecular biology explores the nature of life based on the ever-expanding understanding of genetics and epigenetics and so as to promote technologies with wide applications in life sciences. Indeed, the development of molecular biology and genetic engineering technologies have largely propelled biomedical research and applications. This research area includes studies on basic molecular biology events such as gene duplication, repair, expression regulation, regulatory mechanisms of important biological processes such as development, aging and disease, as well as research and application of molecular biology technologies in molecular evolution, gene editing, and molecular marker development.
Physiology originated from Harvey’s research in the circulation system in the 16th century, which laid the foundation of modern medicine. The Institute of Molecular Physiology uses the concepts and technologies generated from molecular biology to promote physiology research, while the questions raised from physiology research stimulate the advancement and application of molecular biology technologies, including studies on the molecular mechanism and regulation of important physiological processes such as sleep, metabolism, immunity, perception and respiration, as well as the relationship between these processes and diseases.
SZBL is also constructing shared facilities and technology platforms supported by dedicated specialists. Members of the Institute of Molecular Physiology have access to following facilities:
– Bioimaging Platform
The platform hosts advanced imaging instruments, including a multi-photon scanning microscope, a high-intensity cell imaging analysis system that allows radionuclide imaging, and confocal microscopes. In addition, the platform has bioimaging sample preparation and live cell working stations and is also developing novel imaging technologies.
– Multi-omics Mass Spectrometry Platform
The platform currently has an Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid mass spectrometer, an ion-mobility quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer, quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometers, and triple quadrupole mass spectrometers, combined with various ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) systems. The platform also provides state-of-the-art technical support for proteomics, metabolomics, and other omics research.
– Biochemical Analysis Platform
This platform provides large instruments for protein expression, purification, characterization, and structure elucidation. It has ultracentrifuges, focused-ultrasonicators, an Octet RED384 System, a SPR system (Biacore 8K), protein liquid chromatography systems (including AKTA pure and HPLC) for purifying and analyzing biomolecules including protein, nucleic acid, lipids, and carbohydrates.
– Gene Library
The gene library has a collection of genes for genome-wide screening and virus packaging systems that enable further development of high-throughput screening, molecular evolution, and gene therapy.
– High throughput screening platform
The platform leverages a range of automatic high-throughput screening equipment to conduct small-scale compounds screening, high-throughput genetic screening (siRNAs, shRNA, cDNAs and CRISPR) as well as data processing in cell, nematode, zebrafish and other model systems. The platform has an automatic combinatorial chemical synthesizer, an automatic liquid transfer workstation, a small-molecule compound library, and a high-throughput automated drug screening system. It helps scientists for all-dimensional screening experimental design experience, technical guides and data analysis.
– Sequencing platform
The sequencing platform has a high-throughput NGS sequencing system, a single-cell sequencing system and a single-molecule sequencing system. The platform also develops novel high-throughput sequencing technologies based on genome, transcriptome, exome and epigenetics, and comprehensively integrating a variety of innovative sequencing research technologies and tools.
– (Transgenic) Animal Center
Accommodating about 12,000 mouse cages, the SPF-level animal house serves as a facilitator to animal experiments at the SZBL. The center also provides services on transgenic animal construction, animal purification, embryo cryopreservation and etc.
– High Performance Computing and Information Platform
The platform is a computing facility that has high-performance computing clusters, supporting computing software, and a health care big-data system.
– Biosafety Level-3 Laboratory (BSL3 Lab)
The BSL3 Lab ensures basic scientific research facilities and resources to meet the demands of our research development.
Besides, clinical medical research center will promote technical innovation in clinical research and eventually facilitate the application of research achievements, while precision design and manufacturing technology platform will explore the application of precision engineering in synthetic biology, medical engineering, and relevant fields.
