1. Basic Information
Shandong First Medical University (SDFMU), also known as Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, was officially established in February 2019 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It was formed by integrating Taishan Medical University, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, Shandong Provincial Hospital, and Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital . As a key construction university in Shandong Province and the largest medical research institution in the province, it was selected into Shandong’s high-level university “first-class” construction project in 2020 .
The university has campuses in Jinan and Tai’an, with the main campus located in the core area of Jinan International Medical Science Center, covering a total area of over 6,000 mu (400 hectares) . It offers a complete talent training system from bachelor to doctorate, including 56 undergraduate programs, 19 master’s degree authorization points, and 3 doctoral degree authorization points . Currently, it has over 26,000 full-time students, including more than 22,000 undergraduates, 4,100 postgraduates, and 600 international students.
In terms of discipline strength, 9 disciplines including Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Biology and Biochemistry rank in the top 1% of ESI global rankings. Among them, Clinical Medicine has entered the top 0.70‰ globally, ranking 6th among independent medical colleges in China.
2. International Faculty
SDFMU boasts a high-level faculty team with international backgrounds. As of March 2025, the university has 2 overseas academicians, 9 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering (including 5 dual-employed academicians), and 84 national-level talents including recipients of national overseas key talent programs.
The total number of faculty and staff (including affiliated hospitals) exceeds 19,000, of whom 2,727 hold doctoral degrees and 4,338 have senior professional titles. The international education team is well-structured: the International Chinese Education Center has 4 full-time teachers and 7 part-time teachers, including 1 professor, 2 associate professors, and 1 doctoral supervisor, responsible for international students’ Chinese language and professional language teaching.
3. International Exchange
3.1 Global Cooperation Network
The university has established stable cooperative relationships with universities, medical institutions, and research organizations in more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, and Japan . These collaborations cover academic exchange, joint research, and personnel training.
3.2 International Student Education
As one of the first institutions to award the Shandong Provincial Government Scholarship for Foreign Students, SDFMU has recruited international undergraduates and postgraduates since 2004 . By September 2024, it had accumulated over 2,000 international students from 48 countries and regions, including the United States, South Korea, India, and Ghana .
In 2010, it was listed by the Ministry of Education as a qualified institution for English-taught undergraduate medical programs for international students . In 2022, it admitted its first batch of international doctoral students and passed the quality certification for international student education . Up to now, 20 batches of 1,610 international students have obtained degrees, with high pass rates in national medical licensing examinations of their home countries .
3.3 Exchange Programs & Achievements
The university conducts student exchange programs with Japan and South Korea , and selects outstanding teachers and researchers for overseas lectures and seminars annually . It has also established international student alumni associations in India, Nepal, and Africa , and was awarded the title of “Advanced Unit for International Educational Exchange and Cooperation in Shandong Province” in 2012 .
