About Dalian University of Foreign Languages
Dalian University of Foreign Languages is located in Dalian, Liaoning Province, and is the only public foreign language university in Northeast China. It was established in 1964 under the kind care of Premier Zhou Enlai as Dalian Japanese Language College, then renamed as Liaoning Foreign Language College in 1970, and started undergraduate education in 1974, then renamed as Dalian Foreign Language Institute in 1978 and Dalian Foreign Language University in 2013. In 2016, it was selected as one of the “Key Universities in Liaoning Province”, and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature was selected as one of the “First-class Disciplines” in Liaoning Province. The university is ranked 10th in the “2020 Soft Science Ranking of China’s Best Disciplines” and in the top 5% of the country.
The university has two campuses, Lushun Campus and Zhongshan Campus, covering a total area of 1,261,500 square meters, with a construction area of 473,100 square meters, and a library collection of nearly 2 million paper books, more than 700 paper newspapers and periodicals, and more than 900,000 electronic books.
The university has 20 teaching units, one doctoral training program of “Northeast Asian Diplomatic and Foreign Affairs High-end Talents” to serve the special needs of the country, two master’s degree programs in foreign languages and literature and Chinese languages and literature, 18 master’s degree programs in secondary disciplines and five professional degree programs. Among them, Foreign Language and Literature is the first-class discipline in Liaoning Province, and Russian Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature and Spanish Language and Literature are the key disciplines in Liaoning Province. The university has 41 undergraduate majors, covering 15 foreign languages. Among them, there are 9 national first-class undergraduate majors, 4 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, 4 national specialties, 3 Liaoning undergraduate majors, 5 Liaoning undergraduate demonstration majors, 4 Liaoning undergraduate comprehensive reform pilot majors, 2 Liaoning undergraduate curriculum internationalization pilot majors, 2 Liaoning undergraduate majors, 2 Liaoning undergraduate majors, and 2 Liaoning innovative entrepreneurship majors. 2 majors, 1 pilot program of innovative entrepreneurship education reform in Liaoning Province. At present, there are nearly 15,000 full-time students in the university. The university has more than 1,000 teaching staff and employs nearly 100 foreign teachers. There are one national teaching master, one national “Ten Thousand Plan” teaching master, 15 provincial teaching masters, eight State Council special allowance recipients, seven members of the Steering Committee for Teaching Foreign Languages and Literatures in Higher Education, two Liaoning outstanding experts, two Liaoning special professors, one Liaoning climbing scholar, one Liaoning “Xingliao” scholar. There are 6 excellent teachers in Liaoning Province, 1 provincial professional leader, 69 provincial 100 million talents project, 2 excellent experts in Dalian, 3 special allowance recipients of Dalian government, and 3 candidates of Dalian leading talents training project. The university has 18 doctoral supervisors and 258 master supervisors.
In recent years, the university has made remarkable achievements in education and teaching reform. It has won 3 national teaching achievement awards, 59 provincial teaching achievement awards, 2 national high-quality resource sharing courses, 2 national first-class courses, 49 provincial first-class courses, 6 provincial high-quality resource sharing courses and high-quality video public courses. The university has been awarded 1 national teaching team, 1 national university Huang Danian-style teacher team and 5 provincial Huang Danian-style teacher teams.
The university has made great achievements in scientific research. The research base of comparative culture is the key research base of humanities and social sciences of Liaoning Provincial Education Department, and the laboratory of simultaneous interpretation is the key laboratory of Liaoning Province. The university has 34 research institutions, including 7 research centers registered with the Ministry of Education, 15 provincial-level research institutions, and 12 university-level research institutions. 617 provincial-level research projects have been approved since 2012, including one major project and one key project of the National Social Science Foundation. Nearly 500 academic papers have been published in core journals, 32 teaching materials have been approved as national and provincial planning teaching materials for general higher education in the 12th Five-Year Plan, 8 teaching materials have been approved as the first Liaoning Provincial Teaching Material Construction Award, and more than 300 academic achievements have been awarded above the municipal level. The university has set up the “China Northeast Asian Language Research Center”, which is a scientific research institution of the State Language Commission, and the sponsored Foreign Languages and Foreign Language Teaching has been selected as a core Chinese journal, a core journal of AMI Comprehensive Evaluation of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Journals (A Journal), a source journal of Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI), an important journal of NPC Reprographic Journal Information, and a source journal of 100 national universities. It is also one of the top 100 social science journals in China. The university also hosts the provincial-level journals Language Education and Northeast Asian Foreign Language Studies.
In recent years, more than 940 students of the school have won prizes in various national, provincial, municipal and regional professional competitions. Volunteers have been active at major international events such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Summer Davos, and the Asia-Europe Economic Ministers’ Meeting.
Focusing on achieving higher quality and fuller employment for graduates, the school has built two service systems of employment guidance and job market, and continuously enriched the work content. Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 60,000 high-level talents for the country and the local area, and the graduates are active in various fields such as diplomacy, foreign affairs, foreign trade, education, science and technology with good quality, making due contributions to the national and local economic construction. In recent years, the annual employment rate of graduates is above 95% on average, and more than one hundred graduates have worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.
The university has distinctive features of internationalization. It has established friendly cooperation and exchange relations with 235 universities and institutions in 37 countries and regions. The university is the chairman of the Chinese Presidents’ Committee of SCO universities, the chairman of the Liaoning Confucius Institute Cooperative University Alliance, the base of exchange between Chinese and Russian university students of the Ministry of Education, the innovative practice base for high-level international talent training, the training department for students studying abroad, and the Russian language center in cooperation with the World Russian Language Foundation. The university also has several internationalization platforms, such as the Liaoning Experimental Zone of Innovative Mode of Cultivating International Foreign Language Talents and the International Chinese Education Practice and Research Base of the Center for Sino-foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education. With the training modes of exchange study, undergraduate dual degree, undergraduate master’s degree, master’s degree, multilingual exchange and international practical training, the university has been jointly training undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students with famous foreign institutions, and has implemented more than 150 international exchange dispatch projects annually, sending nearly 900 students to study and participate in practical projects in foreign friendly institutions in more than 20 countries. Among them, the university sends nearly 150 students to study abroad every year through the eight types of public programs of the China Scholarship Council. Up to now, the university has set up 10 Confucius Institutes in 10 overseas countries, trained more than 67,300 international Chinese education students, and sent more than 400 Chinese deans, teachers and volunteers to Confucius Institutes. Every year, the school receives more than 1500 international students from nearly 70 countries, including Russia, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand, to study at the school.
