About Nantong University
Nantong University was founded in 1912, which originated from the private Nantong Medical College and Nantong Textile College founded by Mr. Zhang Jian, a famous industrialist and educator in modern times. 2004, the former Nantong Medical College, Nantong Engineering College and Nantong Normal College merged to form the new Nantong University. The university is a comprehensive university jointly built by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Transport, and the first batch of Jiangsu high-level university construction cultivation support universities. The university is ranked 108th in the 2021 China University Evaluation by the China Academy of Management Sciences, 115th in the ESI China University Ranking, and 33rd in the 2020 Soft Science China University Ranking for Outstanding Medical Alumni.
Since the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977, a total of 3 undergraduate graduates have been selected as academicians of the two academies, which is tied for the 35th in the country.
The university has 20 colleges, one independent college (Xinglin College), one large comprehensive tertiary hospital directly under the university (Nantong University Hospital), and colleges of international education and continuing education. It has 3 post-doctoral stations in basic medicine, clinical medicine and information and communication engineering, 3 first-degree doctoral programs in basic medicine, clinical medicine and information and communication engineering, 22 first-degree master’s programs and 10 professional master’s programs. Five disciplines, including clinical medicine, neuroscience and behavior, engineering, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, have been ranked in the top 1% of ESI disciplines worldwide. The university has 2 superior disciplines in Jiangsu universities, 8 key disciplines in Jiangsu Province, and 26 key specialties in clinical medicine in Jiangsu Province.
The university has 3,367 faculty members (including 152 from Henglin College), including 1,659 with senior titles and more than 1,550 doctoral and master’s degree supervisors. There are academicians of the two academies, Changjiang scholars, leading talents of the National Ten Thousand Plan, national candidates of the “Hundred Million Talents Project”, recipients of the National Outstanding Young Scientists Fund, recipients of the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund, selected candidates of the “Hundred Talents Plan” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and chiefs of the “973” project. The chief scientist of the “973” project, the chief scientist of the national key research and development program, the Olympic champion, the high-level talents of the “333 Project” of Jiangsu Province, the special professor of Jiangsu, and other outstanding talents.
The university has 102 undergraduate majors (78 majors to be enrolled in 2020), covering 10 disciplines including literature, science, engineering, medicine, art, economics, law, education, history and management. The university has nearly 40,000 full-time undergraduates (including 11,960 in Henglin College), 3,550 full-time postgraduates and 916 international students, and passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2007 with excellent results and the undergraduate teaching audit evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2017 with high quality. In recent years, the university has won 3 national teaching achievement awards, and formed a number of national teaching teams, national quality courses, national quality resource sharing courses, national quality online open courses, national quality teaching materials, national experimental teaching demonstration centers, national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, Jiangsu first-class undergraduate major construction points, Jiangsu brand majors, etc. The university is a member of the National Graduate Employment Council. The university is a national advanced collective for employment of graduates from ordinary higher education institutions, an advanced unit for research and practice of entrepreneurship education in higher education institutions, the first batch of innovation and entrepreneurship demonstration colleges in Jiangsu Province, and the first batch of advanced colleges and universities for teaching in Jiangsu Province. The average annual employment rate of students is above 98%.
The university has a number of high-end scientific research platforms, such as National Local Joint Engineering Research Center, Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education, Sinopec Key Laboratory, Sinopec Key Laboratory, Provincial Key Laboratory and Engineering Center, Provincial Military-Civil Integration Innovation Platform, Jiangsu University Collaborative Innovation Center, Provincial Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Science of Universities. In the past five years, it has undertaken nearly 600 national key R&D projects, national “973” projects, national natural science foundation projects (469 projects) and social science foundation projects (80 projects), and has been granted 1304 invention patents as the first applicant, and won the National Technical Invention Award, the National Innovation Award, the He Liang He Li Science and Technology Progress Award, and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Award. The university has won a number of high-level awards, including National Technology Invention Award, National Innovation Award, He Liang He Li Science and Technology Progress Award, Excellent Achievement Award of Scientific Research in Higher Education (Science and Technology) of the Ministry of Education, Provincial Science and Technology Award, Provincial Ministerial Association Science and Technology Award, Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Excellent Achievement Award, and has been awarded as an advanced university in Jiangsu Province for many years.
The university has established friendly cooperation with 117 universities and research institutes in the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Australia, Japan, Korea and other countries, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and has carried out many international exchange programs.
The university has four campuses, covering an area of more than 3,700 mu, with a building area of nearly 1 million square meters and about 2,892,800 paper books. It runs 5 academic journals, among which the Journal of Nantong University (Social Science Edition) is a CSSCI source journal and a national Chinese core journal.
