About Xi’an International Studies University
In 1951, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the Central People’s Government, the Russian Department of the College of Literature of Lanzhou University, the Russian Section of the Department of Foreign Languages of Northwestern University and the Russian Specialization Section of Northwestern University were merged to form the predecessor of Xi’an University of Foreign Languages. -In 1952, the Russian class of the Party School of the Northwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China was merged into the Northwest Russian College, and it began to train foreign language talents for the country at the undergraduate level.
The university was renamed Xi’an Foreign Language Institute in 1958, and in 1979 it began to admit postgraduates and in 1986 it became a master’s degree institution approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In January 2013, the university was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a doctoral-granting institution, and was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level disciplines of foreign languages and literature. After nearly 70 years of construction and development, the university has transformed from a single-subject foreign language institution to a multidisciplinary foreign language university highlighting the characteristics of foreign language education and humanities and social sciences research, with humanities as the main subject and social disciplines, management disciplines and science disciplines developing in a coordinated manner, and is an important foreign language talent training base in the western part of China, playing an irreplaceable role in the field of foreign language education, teaching and research in the northwest.
The university covers a total area of 1,593 mu, with a building area of 801,000 square meters. The university vigorously promotes the construction of smart campus, with comprehensive coverage of wired and wireless networks, abundant high-quality network teaching resources, and the gradual completion of public service platforms such as digital campus, and has modern laboratories such as smart classrooms, multilingual translation experimental teaching center, international finance and investment and business comprehensive simulation experimental teaching center, multimodal laboratory of Northeast Asian studies, and collaborative innovation laboratory, and the whole university is equipped with multimedia facilities in classrooms The classroom multimedia facilities of the university are 100% equipped. The library collection covers 54 languages, with 2,463 Chinese and foreign language newspapers and periodicals and 65 databases. The university has been awarded the honorary titles of “Safe Campus” and “Civilized Unit Pioneer” in Shaanxi Province.
The university has 20 colleges (departments) and other teaching institutions, and has a first-degree program in foreign languages and literature, 13 second-degree programs and a postdoctoral research station, and joint training of doctoral students with 8 foreign universities. There are 7 master’s degree programs in foreign language and literature, Chinese language and literature, business administration, education, journalism and communication, Marxist theory and applied economics, 74 second-level degree programs, and 9 professional degree programs in translation, Chinese international education, tourism management, accounting, journalism and communication, education, finance, international business and art. There are 60 undergraduate majors and 4 minors, covering 7 disciplines of literature, economics, management, law, education, science and art. The first-level discipline of foreign language and literature is a special discipline of philosophy and social science in Shaanxi Province, and the key disciplines of English language and literature, French language and literature, and German language and literature are in Shaanxi Province; 12 majors of English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, translation, business English, tourism management, Arabic, Hindi, and business administration are national first-class undergraduate majors. English and French majors are national comprehensive reform pilots, and five majors, including English, Russian, French, tourism management and translation, are national specialties. There are 7 provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors, 5 provincial famous brand majors, 9 provincial special majors, 13 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, 1 national bilingual teaching demonstration course, 2 provincial bilingual teaching demonstration courses, 16 provincial quality courses, 19 provincial quality resource sharing courses, 10 provincial first-class courses, 10 provincial experimental zones for innovation of talent cultivation mode, and 15 provincial-level teaching teams. The university has been awarded one provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education training base, two provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education reform pilot colleges, three provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and one provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching center. The “Jingdong Cloud-Xi’an Foreign Studies University Cross-border E-commerce Translation Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Education Base” and the “Shaanxi Radio and Television Station-Xi’an Foreign Studies University Social Media Innovation Practice Training Base” were approved as provincial off-campus innovation and entrepreneurship practice bases for college students. The university and Sichuan Foreign Studies University jointly initiated the establishment of the Western Higher Education Teaching Alliance for Foreign Language Education by 31 western universities and 7 units including Foreign Studies and Foreign Education Agency. The university is a recommended institution for excellent undergraduates to take master’s degree without examination, a non-language early batch enrollment institution and a qualified institution to receive guaranteed students. There are 20,000 doctoral students, master students, undergraduates, foreign students and various training students.
The university has strong scientific research capabilities, with the Polish Research Center and Northeast Asian Research Center being registered as country and regional research centers by the Ministry of Education, the South Asian Research Center being approved as a “Belt and Road” country and regional research incubation center by the National People’s Committee, the Belt and Road Language Service Collaborative Innovation Center being a 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center in Shaanxi Province, the European and American Literature Research Center, the Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics Research Center, and the Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics Research Center. The Research Center of European and American Literature, the Research Center of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and the Research Institute of International Public Opinion and International Communication are the key research bases of philosophy and social sciences in Shaanxi (universities), and there are five research institutes, including the Research Institute of Foreign Languages and Literature, the Research Institute of Translation and Intercultural Studies, the Research Institute of Regional and Country Studies, the Research Institute of International Public Opinion and International Communication, and the Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. It has undertaken a number of national, provincial and ministerial level research projects funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture, and has published high-quality dictionaries, monographs, translations, theses and teaching materials. The academic journals “Teaching Foreign Languages”, “Human Geography” and “Journal of Xi’an Foreign Language University” are core journals of Chinese humanities and social sciences and Chinese geography with certain influence in domestic and foreign academic circles, among which “Teaching Foreign Languages” and “Human Geography” have been selected as CSSCI source journals for many years, and “Journal of Xi’an Foreign Language University” is a source journal of CSSCI extended edition and “Chinese Core Journals” of Peking University. The university has signed cooperation agreements with 270 universities and research institutions in 49 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, etc., to implement joint training programs for talents at different levels of study and master’s degree. The university has also launched academic exchange and cooperation programs such as faculty and student exchange, mutual recognition of credits, mutual awarding of degrees, and joint holding of international conferences; and introduced overseas study visit and internship programs in the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and Hong Kong. The university has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as a designated institution for the China-US Fulbright Program, a partner institution for the Young Backbone Teachers’ Study Abroad Program and the Outstanding Undergraduate International Exchange Program, a commissioned training unit for international students under the National Government Scholarship Program, and the first unit in Northwest China certified by the Ministry of Education as a test center for HSK (written and machine tests) and HSKK. The university actively responds to the national initiative of “One Belt and One Road” construction, establishes Central Asia College to carry out education for international students from Central Asian countries, sets up nine “One Belt and One Road” country and regional research centers, and is approved by the Ministry of Education to hold the Arabic language and literature program with Sharjah University in the United Arab Emirates. The university has also been approved by the Ministry of Education to hold a Sino-foreign cooperative program with Sharjah University in the UAE for undergraduate education in Arabic language and literature. The university has established three Confucius Institutes in Kazakhstan, Argentina and France, and has been awarded the “Advanced Chinese Cooperation Institution Award” by the former Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, Shaanxi government departments and education departments, etc. In 2012, the multilingual base for international promotion of Chinese language (Xi’an) was approved by Hanban. The university cooperates with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Institute of Management Accountants to offer ACCA teaching and reform classes, CIMA teaching and reform classes, CFA teaching and reform classes, and co-established the Russian Language and Culture Center with Novosibirsk State Technical University in Russia and the Sino-German Institute with the University of Münster in Germany; the Korean Cultural Institute, the Goethe Institute in Germany, and the Princeton English Group in the United States have respectively set up in the university “Sejong Academy”, “Goethe Language Center” and “Susan Chin English Center”. In addition, the school also has a training department for overseas students from the Ministry of Education, a preparatory education center for students from the China Scholarship Council, and a training base for students from the China (Ministry of Education) Scholarship Service Center.
