The Asian Centre for Mathematics Education (ACME) at East China Normal University (ECNU) is a research institute based in the School of Mathematical Sciences and located in the Minhang Campus of ECNU, Shanghai. Its current director is Professor Lianghuo Fan, who returned to China after having studied and worked in the US, Singapore and the UK for over two decades and started his career at ECNU as a Distinguished Professor in April 2018. ACME’s vision is to become a world-class institute of mathematics education research and development and its mission is to contribute to the advancement of mathematics education and education in China, Asia and the world. The editorial office of the Asian Journal for Mathematics Education (AJME), an open-access, peer-reviewed, international research journal jointly published by ECNU and Sage, is based at ACME with Prof Fan as editor-in-chief.

Position 1: Full-Time Open Rank Faculty Position (permanent)
Requirements and Responsibilities
- An applicant must have an earned doctoral degree in mathematics education or a related field from reputable universities.
- An applicant must have passion for academic journal publishing, preferably with good experience in editing and reviewing for English research journals.
- An applicant must maintain a high standard of ethical and professional conduct.
- For applicants from non-English speaking countries, proficiency in both written and spoken English is required.
The main responsibilities of the position include one or more of the following duties: (1) playing a leading role in editing, publication and the development of AJME, (2) teaching and graduate supervision in the area of mathematics or mathematics education, and (3) conducting research in mathematics education.
Salary and Benefits
This is a permanent open rank faculty position. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications, and employee’s fringe benefits will be provided in accordance with the relevant policies and regulations of ECNU. The position carries additional generous financial support for academic conference travel and conducting research activities.

Position 2/3: Postdoctoral Fellows in Mathematics Education
One to two full-time postdoctoral fellow positions in the field of mathematics education are available. Each position is normally for a fixed term of two years, with a possible extension of six months.
The postdoctoral fellows are expected to
- (1) actively participate in ACME’s current research projects, and write or co-write new research proposals and publications with high quality;
- (2) assist Director of ACME in organising academic events such as seminars, symposiums and in disseminating ACME research to the wider world; and
- (3) perform other duties or tasks (e.g., as TA) as required by the university for all postdoc fellows.
Required Qualifications
- Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree in mathematics education or a closely related field from a reputable university. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed their doctorate in the last three years.
- Applicants should have clear research interest, be willing to explore new directions in mathematics education and be open-minded in terms of research.
- An applicant must maintain a high standard of ethical and professional conduct.
- The successful applicants must have good abilities in mathematics education research and academic writing. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is required.
Salary and Benefits
- The annual salary is expected to be from 200,000-320,000 RMB (monthly payment), depending on the qualifications. Fringe benefits are provided in accordance with the relevant policies and regulations of the university.
- The position carries additional generous financial support for academic conference travel and conducting research activities.
- Postdoctoral apartment, when available, can be rented at a reduced price in accordance with the university regulations.
