Job description

Part-time English Teacher

We are looking for a committed teacher with at least two-year teaching experience in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to join face-to-face an Applied Academic English course for postgraduate students in MSU Institute of Nanjing Agricultural University in China. You will be responsible for implementing a teaching plan to enhance students’ reading, listening and speaking proficiency in English according to the school’s requirement and preparing students for English medium instruction (EMI) in their subject areas (i.e. food science and technology, agricultural economics and management). It will be fundamental to provide knowledge and instruction to students by putting emphasis on reading comprehension, listening comprehension, analysis and summary of the related materials. The ideal candidate will be passionate for the job with an ability to reach out to students and create a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom.

Brief introduction to the course

This course centers on the training of reading, listening and speaking ability in English for disciplinary studies.

It consists of four modules: vocabulary development, reading articles and writing summaries, attending an academic lecture, and academic presentations.

Students are expected to grasp academic study skills and adapt to EMI classes. More specifically, this course aims to enhance students to:

  1. grasp the words in Academic Word List (AWL), and learn some disciplinary common terms and expressions;
  2. get familiar with the structure of disciplinary articles, news, reports or lectures, and learn to notice the main points or target point when reading or listening;
  3. understand the classes or lectures delivered in English, grasp note-taking skills, and know the way of organizing and summarizing information;
  4. be able to accurately express common disciplinary knowledge or discuss related topics in English, and be able to present research articles orally;
  5. learn academic exchange skills and etiquette, and be able to act as speaker or host of small-scale seminars;
  6. think about, analyze and assess problems independently and improve critical thinking.
