About Shantou University

Shantou University, located in the city of Shantou, Guangdong Province, is a provincial and ministerial university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and the Li Ka-shing Foundation. It is the only public university in the world that is continuously funded by the Li Ka-shing Foundation, a private foundation.

The university was established by the State Council on August 26, 1981 as a comprehensive university in Guangdong Province and a comprehensive university in Chaoshan, Guangdong Province, and began to admit undergraduates in 1983; in September of the same year, Shantou Medical College was incorporated into the university; in 1993, it was granted the right to confer master’s degrees; in 1998, it was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees; in June 2012, the Ministry of Education, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province and the Li Ka-shing Foundation jointly established STU. In 2017, the Guangdong Israel Institute of Technology (GIT), created by STU in cooperation with the Israel Institute of Technology, enrolled students for the first time.

The official website of the university in 2020 shows that the university has two campuses: the main campus and the medical school; 12 colleges, with a graduate school and nine residential colleges (schools); five affiliated hospitals, one dental clinic and five trust hospitals; and nearly 13,000 full-time students.
