Faculty Cluster Hire in Geological Oceanography and Earth Surface Processes

College of Ocean and Earth Sciences

Xiamen University, China

The Department of Geological Oceanography (DGO) (http://dgo.xmu.edu.cn) is expanding its faculty with the addition of six (6) new positions planned for the next phase. The College of Ocean and Earth Sciences (http://coe.xmu.edu.cn) aims to establish the DGO as a premier center in land-ocean interactions, sedimentary processes/records, and global change. The ranks of the appointments are open, and are commensurate with the applicants’ qualifications and experience.

At this time, we seek highly qualified candidates in four complementary and synergistic areas of study:

Land-Sea Sediment Processes and Records – Positions will enhance capabilities in modeling and observations of material transport/storage/transformation within and between the land and ocean. Examples of areas that are of particular interest include, but are not limited to: landscape evolution, surface processes/fluvial geomorphology, sediment transport and deposition/erosion, stratigraphic modeling, sediment organic matter diagenesis.

Coastal Geology and Hazards –  Positions will support the sustainable development of China’s diverse coastal environments and provide a better understanding of natural hazards and threats related to accelerating global change. Particular areas of interest include: mineral resources, paleoseismology, sea-level change effects, coastal erosion.

Seafloor Characterization – Positions are available in the general area are of seafloor imaging and subbottom profiling. We are especially interested in candidates who apply state-of-the-art seagoing surface and/or subbottom mapping tools and analysis skills to the investigation of coastal and continental margin environments.

Paleoclimatology and Paleoceanography – Positions will complement existing strengths in Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology in order to better understand past change and future projections under accelerated global change. Particular areas of interest include: application of geochemical (organic and/or inorganic) techniques as climate, weathering and oceanographic proxies, and the application of “big data” analysis to proxy data and climate model outputs.

We seek applicants with proven record or promise to contribute to the interdisciplinary research and teaching missions of the College. A Ph.D. degree is required at the time of appointment and in the case of a Chinese degree two years of overseas postdoctoral position is preferred with exceptions for outstanding candidates.

In conjunction with the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (http://mel2.xmu.edu.cn/melwebold/en/index.asp), the College has access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and offers internationally competitive compensation, start-up and relocation packages. Special recruitment programs are available to exceptionally well-qualified candidates. Xiamen University recently launched a 3600-ton (78 m) research vessel and completed construction of a marine station for cutting-edge education and research in oceanography. XMU envisions the development of a world-class program in Geological Oceanography with focus on interdisciplinary studies of human and natural processes which affect the land, ocean and atmosphere of the continental margin.

Xiamen University, located along China’s SE coast, was founded in 1921 with the vision to become the leading international university in China (https://en.xmu.edu.cn/11100/list.htm). Xiamen University has inter-university cooperative ties with over 270 institutions of higher education at home and abroad, including the establishment of a new campus in Malaysia (http://www.xmu.edu.my/14674/list.htm).

To apply email a cover letter, CV, contact information for 3-5 references, and statements of research and teaching philosophy and goals to Mr. Jie Zheng, Chair Assistant, Department of Geological Oceanography (jiezheng@xmu.edu.cn). Applications will be considered beginning March 15, 2022 however the positions will remain open until filled.
